Tour Historic Places
Visitors flock to Hermannhof Winery, not only to taste the wine but to explore the nearly 170-year-old wine cellars on the property. Built between 1848 and 1852 as one of Hermann’s first breweries and wineries, the property has 10 dark stone cellars on site.
Initially, winemaking was only a small portion of Hermannhof’s business, but by 1904, the winery was producing 3 million gallons of wine each year. Now, these cellars are on the National Register of Historic Places and draw visitors each day. Almost all visitors opt to take a self-guided tour into the deepest, darkest depths of the damp, stone-walled cellars. In the summer, these cool cellars offer sweet relief to sun-drenched visitors. But, stay too long and the dark basement filled with the skeletons of ancient wine barrels of centuries past just might give you a scare. If they don’t, the eerie ghost stories will!
Taste Award-Winning Wine
Not to be outdone by the cellars in which they are made, Hermannhof wines are distinguised, award-winning, and stand on their own as reason enough to plan a visit. The winery’s tasting room is staffed by friendly, knowledgeable guides who enjoy interacting with guests, answering questions, and sharing their knowledge of the winery’s history. Often times, between pouring samples and leading tastings, staff members will share interesting details about Hermannhof and how its hybrid varieties of wine got their names.
Shop for Wine and Other Treats
A nod to its German roots, the Hermannhof Winery sausage shop is a unique departure from the traditional winery. Part deli, part snack shop, the store is a great place to purchase everything you need to accompany any Hermannhof wine you purchase. In addition to sausage, the store sells cheese, bread, crackers, sandwiches, and more. If you plan to spend a leisurely afternoon at the winery, stop in to get a picnic lunch or meat and cheese plate to enjoy with a bottle of wine. The nearby beer garden is another great place to enjoy the snacks and wine you purchase. This space is the perfect casual, semi-shaded spot to spend part of your day at Hermannhof.
