History of Stone Hill Winery
Established in Hermann during 1847, Stone Hill quickly grew to become the second largest winery in the United States. Over time, the world began to sing the winery’s praises and a few of its selections won gold medals in eight world fairs, including Vienna and Philadelphia. Sadly, the rise of the Prohibition in 1920 crumbled Missouri’s wine industry and the once spectacular winery that stood atop the hill was used for nothing more than growing mushrooms in the cellar. Years later, in 1965, Jim and Betty Held moved to Hermann with their four small children and purchased the old winery. Renovations to restore the forgotten vineyard began immediately and before long, Stone Hill Winery was back up and running and once again producing quality wines.
Since the Stone Hill Winery’s reopening, it has received numerous awards including Small Business of the Year and eight Missouri Governor’s Cups!
Stone Hill Winery Selections
Stone Hill offers a wide variety of wines that meet nearly every preference, even for the pickiest of wine drinkers. Indulge in one of their rich and bold red wines or light and refreshing blancs. For wine lovers with a sweet tooth, Stone Hill’s dessert wine choices – rosés and sparkling spumante – may be just the thing! They even create fruity Jacquesse wines with fun flavors like “Kick’n Kolada” and “Kosmo,” and succulent grape juices with unique tastes.
Tours of Stone Hill Winery
Would you like to know how each exquisite creation from Stone Hill Winery is made? The original Hermann location tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at their quality wine-making process and property. Beginning in the Stone Hill vineyard, you will explore one of the greatest wineries in American history and end with a tasting of their 30 award-winning wines and grape juices. VIP and Group Tours are also available!
Tour the winery Sunday-Thursday 11:00-4:00pm, Friday-Saturday 11:00-6:00pm beginning at the top of every hour, and Saturday every half hour.
Enjoy Lunch or Dinner at Stone Hill Winery
The original carriage house and horse barn on the 1847 property have been transformed into Vintage Restaurant. It’s character, delicious German-inspired specialties, and warm charm have won the eatery the “Best German Restaurant in America” award.
