If you’re looking for a unique place to enjoy the outdoors in Missouri, Graham Cave State Park is the perfect place to go. Located above the Loutre River and nestled in the middle of over 356 acres of forest is an unusual sandstone cave where archaeologists made an important discovery. When you visit, you will learn about its fascinating history and have the opportunity to picnic, fish, camp, hike, and more!
The Cave
As you explore the park, you’ll be walking in the footsteps of the hunter-gatherers from the period of ancient Dalton and Archaic Native Americans. We know this because archaeologists discovered artifacts left behind by the cave’s ancient occupants who sheltered in this region over 10,000 years ago. Throughout the park and inside the cave entrance, you’ll notice interpretive exhibits to guide you through the lives of the early inhabitants.
The Trails
Due to the blend of diverse lands, such as rocky forests and glades, this area also attracts abundant wildlife, including deer, beavers, and native plants like the prickly pear cactus and purple prairie clover. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the park is to explore the several hiking and biking trails that wind through the area.
- Fern Ridge Trail is an accessible walking trail near the interpretive shelter and picnic area and connects with Graham Cave Trail.
- Loutre River Trail is the longest hiking and bicycling trail. It runs from the picnic shelter at the south end of the park to the north camping areas. It is a scenic route along the Loutre River.
- Indian Glade Trail is an accessible walking trail that leads to the cave’s entrance. It also connects to the camping areas.
- Graham Cave Trail is a walking trail that leads to Graham Cave and connects with an asphalt trail leading to the interpretive shelter. The asphalt trail has a high degree of incline.
The Activities
Once you’ve explored the trails, enjoy a picnic lunch in the sun or under one of the many picnic shelters. If you’re looking to explore the water, there is a boat ramp on the Loutre River where you can put in or fish for catfish and bluegill.
