If you’ve never heard about this small town, you may be wondering what’s so special about Hermann, Missouri. Located along the Missouri River in Central Missouri, Hermann is a picturesque, storybook town where residents and visitors alike enjoy abundant amenities, rich culture, and scenic views! Here are a few reasons to visit this special place we call home.
Small Town Charm
This village, settled by German immigrants in the 1800’s, may be small in size, but it’s big in charm. German culture influences everything from the style of the buildings to food, wine, and festivals. Sturdy, red brick buildings, white church steeples, and clock towers are sprinkled throughout the lush, rolling terrain to create something out of a storybook. You have to see it to believe it. And there are ample ways to do just that. Take a scenic drive through wine country. Walk or bike along the vast Katy Trail. Explore one of the historic museums or buildings while on our Hermann Hill 3-mile walk. The friendly residents and business owners will make you feel right at home. Your dogs are welcome at our Hermann Hill River Bluff Cottages and many area businesses as well! Willkommen!
German History
In 1837, German immigrants came to the Hermann area, which resembled the Rhine Valley, to create the “heart of German-America” where traditional German culture and peoples could thrive. Those who settled here made the most of the rocky bluffs and vertical hills by planting vineyards.
Today, Hermann’s Old-World charm is reminiscent of an earlier era. More than 150 buildings appear on the National Register of Historic Places, so there’s much to see and do. Be sure to stroll the German-styled sidewalks in the historic downtown.
Wineries & Vineyards
Thanks to the luscious soil and rolling terrain, the Hermann area is well-known for its vineyards and wineries. In fact, seven wineries in and around Hermann account for more than one third of MIssouri’s wine production! Our town boasts the ever popular Hermann Wine Trail made up of six family-owned wineries. Each year, the Wine Trail offers six festive events where select wines are paired with distinctive food, such as bacon, cheese, and everyone’s favorite… chocolate! These events do require tickets as seating is limited, so be prepared to book early.
Don’t worry if you can’t make an event. The Wine Trail is open 365 days per year for daily tastings. Visit up to seven stops where you can sample and savor the flavors of award-winning wines. Stop for a tasting. Take a tour. Shop for a souvenir. Enjoy the views!
Abundant Nature
Lush greenery abounds throughout the Hermann area thanks to the thousands of trees, the mighty Missouri River, and the undulating topography. In addition to the Katy Trail mentioned above, there are several state parks and preserves where you can stroll, hike, and explore, such as:
