Introduction to Maifest
Maifest is held in Hermann, Missouri, on the third weekend in May by the Riverfront Park. This annual celebration features a variety of traditional German activities and entertainment, such as:live music, a Bavarian-style beer garden, parades, traditional dances, and more!
History of Maifest
This tradition started out as Maifest Sunday, which was the last day of school picnics for children. The children would sit through church and the family dinner until it was time to assemble in front of the German School. There, they were given a Maifest badge and an American flag. The Municipal Band led a parade to the city park where the children would line up for Knockwurst on a bun and pink lemonade. The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting the concession stands and playing games. It was one of the high points of the year. Over the years, the traditional activities of Maifest have continued, but new traditions have also been added.
