"We're casual, down-to-earth people," says Lynn Helming about her restaurant. "I think people feel comfortable and at home here." Lynn says she dishes up home-style food "like you were raised on" at Lyndee's Restaurant, located at 911 S. Market St.
Lyndee's offers a daily luncheon special. According to Lynn, BLT salad and fried chicken are among the more popular menu items. All U Can Eat catfish and frog legs bring in the crowds on Friday nights. Top round, ground on the premises, is used for hamburgers, and Lynn makes her own sausage and bratwurst. Pizza with lots of grated provolone cheese is another favorite. All can be accompanied by beer and wine.
And then there's Millie Brandt, who creates all the homemade desserts. "I bought her with the business," says Lynn. "From one day to the next we don't know what she's going to whip up." Sometimes Millie's apple dumplings are gone in less than an hour.
When not in the kitchen, Lynn enjoys visiting with her customers. She claims that out-of-towners often comment that restaurants like Lyndee's are becoming obsolete. They are used to franchises and fast-food restaurants. She says, "We're just country people, and that's okay."
Lyndee's is open every morning at 6. Closing time is 2 p.m. on Tuesday and 8 p.m. the rest of the week. For information, call 573-486-5923.
