Bob and Chris Rappold have operated Europa Restaurant in their circa 1900 Victorian home across from Hermann's city park since 2001. Both are self-taught cooks. They operated two restaurants and a bakery in Columbia and Arrow Rock, Missouri before returning to Bob's hometown of Hermann.
The name Europa is a reflection of their cooking style. The menu combines dishes from France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and, of course, Germany. Europe's menus are seasonal. During the summer months Chris concentrates on Mediterranean specialties. In winter, she prepares dishes from colder climates in Eastern Europe. An extensive array of European wines are offered along with wines made locally. Beer and mixed drinks also are available.
Chris prepares her dishes from scratch. Because the food is cooked to order, Chris will adapt to her guests' dietary needs. "A lot of what we're doing is not real fancy," says Chris. "And, we feel we give people ample portions." Chris and Bob also invite people to just stop by for a simple meal that may consist of an appetizer or a bowl of soup and a glass of wine. They'd like to have people feel comfortable ordering a partial meal if that's all they're hungry for. "We'd just like for people to enjoy our cooking," she says.
Once a month, usually on a Sunday, Europa offers some type of entertainment. Also in the works are multi-course dinners with wine pairings and cooking classes. Visit their website at www.europa-restaurant.com for more information.
